Dedicated vs. Shared Hosting
The major difference between dedicated and shared hosting is the number of websites on one server. With shared hosting, the server is split depending on the number of websites sharing it, and usually minimal to no configuration options. Dedicated hosting means you have your own server, and full access to its resources.
Considering their main difference, it makes sense that dedicated hosting is more flexible and secure. Opposed to shared hosting, you can scale your resources based on your needs – such as website traffic – to ensure your site is performing at its best.
Additionally, your own site’s security is not dependent on whether other sites on the server are insecure. With a dedicated server, you have total control over its content, so you can better protect against hacks and data loss.
CDN (Content Delivery Network)
What is CDN?
How does a CDN work? A CDN is a collection of servers located all around the world. When a browser loads static content, the request is automatically routed to the server geographically closest to the browser. This helps the content load much more quickly. In addition, because your content is loaded from many servers in separate locations, bursts of traffic are less likely to cause issues, because the burst is spread out over hundreds of servers, rather than just one.
WP Engine offers the ability to put all of your static content on a CDN with little to no configuration required. We manage distributing the content and rewriting URLs in the code. We give you control over enabling or disabling the CDN as needed. In short, you just write your blog as usual and we transparently make your blog faster and more scalable.
The WP Engine platform has an automatic backup feature to help ensure that your data is kept safe. These daily backup points can be accessed by visiting your WP Engine User Portal. These backup points contain your environment’s database and all theme, plugin, uploads, and core files.
You have the ability to:
- Create a Backup Point Manually through your User Portal
- Roll Back to a Previous Backup Point through your User Portal
Threat Detection and Blocking
Our platform dynamically inspects traffic, looking for new kinds of attacks, or patterns of requests from certain locations that indicate nefarious activity, and we block many of those attacks automatically. Our rules evolve constantly. We witness traffic across our entire network of customers, serving over 2 billion hits a day, and those learnings are inherited automatically by all of our customers. We block over 150 million bad requests every month, and we’re constantly adding new rules as attackers evolve their tactics.
Your WordPress site is secured with HTTPS
Over the past few years, Google has increasingly stressed the importance of HTTPS encryption for websites, going as far as to mark certain HTTP pages as “not secure” if they contain data fields for things such as passwords or credit card information.
Non-HTTPS status can also affect a website’s search ranking, and earlier this year, Google announced, with the release of Google Chrome 68 in July, that all HTTP pages will be marked as “not secure” in an effort to phase out the older, less secure web protocol.
While this will help make the internet a safer place, it will also create some issues for site owners who have yet to make the switch. Google Chrome handles the vast majority of worldwide browser traffic, and sites that show up as “not secure” face a potentially massive dip in traffic.
Let’s Encrypt certificates provide the same level of security as paid certificates and offer the same HTTPS protection. Because these certificates are fully automated, WP Engine will also automatically renew them for you after you set them up.
* Our hosting plans are billed annually/$300 per year
** Site maintenance is $65 per hour after the 3 hours.
Secure WordPress Hosting on WP Engine
Security matters. Not only does a secure environment protect you from data loss or embarrassing hacker takeovers, properly secured sites are faster, since bogus traffic and requests aren’t eating up your resources. The WP Engine platform meets the demanding security requirements of even the world’s largest brands. From physical security at the data center to protection against sophisticated exploits and customer separation at the kernel level, we provide a highly-secure WordPress experience to every customer.
Delight your customers with a site they never have to wait for.
Specifically designed for scalable WordPress hosting, our proprietary front-end is built on thousands of carefully-designed rules that we continually audit and adjust for maximum performance. These rule sets determine how we serve content for fastest load times and which traffic we block for security reasons.
Our caching mechanism also dramatically reduces server load. Instead of serving your static content from the back-end, which can be slow, we serve this content from our front-end system, which can handle high levels of concurrent traffic.
Managed patching and updates
When kept up-to-date, the WordPress core is extremely secure. To ensure that your site is running the most current version of WordPress, we automatically upgrade your installs whenever minor patches are released. When a major update is released, we thoroughly test it before recommending that our customers upgrade. We’ll even work with you directly to make your upgrade as painless as possible.
Real-time Security Threat Detection
Instant backup and restore with snapshot backups
If you’ve ever hesitated to change your site out of fear of making a costly mistake, you’ll love snapshot backups. A snapshot is a backup of your WordPress site that takes only seconds to create, so you can easily back up your site before you make any change (for example, updating a plugin). Your snapshots can act as restore points if you want to undo an action, or starting points for a new version of your site if you want to experiment. Each snapshot includes your content, themes, and plugins and is downloadable, so you can back up your WordPress files to a different location.
We take snapshots of your site every day, and always before we make a major update to your site.
One-click restore is just as easy. When you roll back to a previous version of your site, the restored version is usually ready in under a minute.
